R.I.P. Howard Zinn

January 28, 2010

The People Speak

We’re very sad to report that Howard Zinn, the brilliant civil
rights activist and political scientist, passed away yesterday at age
87. Zinn is best known for his book “A People’s History of the United
States,” which told the story of the country through the eyes of the
disenfranchised: women, minorities and the working class. The book was
released in 1980, when most of America was suffering from Reagan fever,
and has since served as strong historical evidence against the notion
that big business and its political allies want to let their prosperity
“trickle down” to the masses. It has sold over a million copies to
date. If you’ve never read it, we highly recommend checking it out.

Last year, our team at Studio Number One had the opportunity to do
some work on Zinn’s History Channel television special, “The People
Speak.” Some of us even got to meet him – one of those
once-in-a-lifetime experiences. We wish the best for his loved ones,
and we take comfort ourselves in the belief that his ideas will live on
forever.

A message from Antonino D’Ambrosio:
The passing of Howard Zinn makes this a sad day for myself and everyone at
La Lutta. As some of you know, I came to work and become friends with
Zinn over the past few years. We had planned to do a few publics
together around my new book and film in the spring and fall 2010. I’ve
contributed a tribute to him, “Howard Zinn: Historian of the Human
Spirit,” published by The Progressive. You can read here:  http://www.progressive.org/

AIPAS,
Antonino

HELP HAITI

January 18, 2010

To support the relief effort in Haiti, Studio Number One has created
a benefit t-shirt (designed by Casey Ryder), with 100% of the retail
cost ($15) going to the U.S. Fund for UNICEF, the U.N. children’s
charity that is currently providing medical supplies, water and
temporary shelter in Haiti. While there are many aid organizations
doing great work on the ground in Haiti right now, UNICEF has an
especially critical mission: locating and caring for children who have
been separated from their families since the earthquake.

Click here to contribute to UNICEF by purchasing the Studio Number One "Haiti" shirt via CafePress.

Additionally, we’ve provided Casey’s artwork to Music for Relief, a
nonprofit founded by members of the band Linkin Park to raise funds for
disaster relief around the world. Music for Relief has created a compilation of previously unreleased tracks from Alanis Morissette, The
All-American Rejects, Dave Matthews Band, Enrique Iglesias, Hoobastank,
Kenna, Linkin Park, Lupe Fiasco, Peter Gabriel and Slash, and the
proceeds from downloads of these tracks will go directly to Haiti
relief efforts.

PABLOVE BENEFIT CONCERT POSTERS

On the occasion of the Pablove Foundation Benefit Concert, November

Rebel Motorcycle Club and more.

Pablove Benefit tickets are available through Ticketmaster and Pablove Benefit posters will be for sale at the concert and through the Pablove site.

Pablove, which supports the pediatric cancer community at Childrens

Pablove is named in honor of Pablo Thrailkill Castelaz, who passed away
in June at the age of 6 after a 13-month battle with a rare form of
cancer. “Pablove is an amazing, powerful organization,” says Studio
Number One Creative Director Shepard Fairey. “Their work is so
positive, and so personal on an emotional level. [Pablo’s father and
Pablove founder] Jeff Castelaz’s candor and perseverance through
Pablo’s illness and since are really inspiring to people battling
cancer as well as their loved ones.”

The Pablove posters, designed by Studio Number One Art Director
Kristian Henson, were built from hand-stamped woodblocks, inspired by
mid-20th-century Scandinavian children’s books. Says Henson, “We wanted
to capture Pablove’s message of joy, compassion and love in images that
could be appreciated by children and adults alike.”
