OVERVIEW:

Studio Number One worked with Vancouver-based design studio Meanwhile to create the logo and brand identity for both their studio and their product line City Blocks, which offers adaptive street furniture for urban spaces.

Meanwhile is dedicated to creating innovative products, places, and experiences for people in urban settings and public spaces by partnering and working directly with business improvement districts, developers, municipalities, and / or place managers to transform spaces into accessible and pleasing urban spaces. Their manufacturing arm, City Blocks, focuses on producing adaptive street furniture that enhances public spaces. Together, Meanwhile and City Blocks envision a more dynamic and people-friendly approach to urban design.

SNO designed Meanwhile’s brand identity to reflect its modern, playful approach to urban space design. The creative direction for the branding was intended to stand out in busy city environments and attract people to pause, relax, and enjoy the surroundings. The logo and overall branding feature a curvy typeface, whimsy graphic elements and patterns, and a vibrant color palette, evoking a sense of fun and approachability—key qualities of the parklets and adaptable spaces that Meanwhile creates.

While connected to Meanwhile’s branding, the identity for City Blocks takes on a more refined and industrial tone. SNO designed a bold, minimalist logo that draws inspiration from the modular street furniture City Blocks produces. The logo’s stencil font pays homage to road signage, symbolizing City Blocks’ role in urban infrastructure and mobility solutions. This clean, modern, and functional aesthetic aligns with the company's mission to beautify and improve city streets across North America.

Both brands share a bright, forward-thinking aesthetic that reflects the innovative solutions Meanwhile and City Blocks bring to urban spaces. While Meanwhile’s branding emphasizes a playful, engaging atmosphere, City Blocks' identity highlights functionality and the beautification of city infrastructure. Together, they communicate a cohesive vision for creating more accessible, enjoyable urban environments.

SNO developed comprehensive branding manuals for both Meanwhile and City Blocks. These manuals offer clear guidelines on logo usage, typography, patterns, color palettes, and photo overlays, ensuring consistency across various platforms and media. They also include mockups to demonstrate how the branding can be applied in real-world contexts.

The unified yet distinct brand identities successfully position Meanwhile and City Blocks as forward-thinking leaders in the design and enhancement of urban spaces.
